Tools Used to Create Business Intelligence Systems

Utilization of data warehouse in the business world is almost universal, while the number of universities that utilize data warehouse today is still relatively small. Accessible at any time, relevant information that can assist in the decision-making process, and for this reason, business intelligence technology has an important role to play at all levels of management within an institution. In the midst of increasingly fierce competition, Universities must complement its infrastructure with the support of information technology. Management as a decision maker requires a tool that can encourage Universities to compete and also require knowledge of information technology that can support them to be able to analyze and help them make the right and quick decision in order to excel in competition with other universities and improve services. Business Intelligence (BI) is one of the terms of a decision-making system that can help management make ad hoc decisions. The fact that business is constantly changing. This is where BI takes the role that businesses adapt to all changes. With BI, the collection of information from various sources is more assured in anticipation of change, both inside and outside the organization in this case Higher Education.

In making a web portal business intelligence system required university software system development (software development), namely:

Microsoft Business Intelligence Development Studio or abbreviated BIDS is a software used to design, create, and test packages from business intelligence systems. BIDS has three major components in developing business intelligence systems: Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services, Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services and Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services.

Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) is a tool used to extract, transform, and load processes and is classified as a business intelligence feature. ETL is a process to collect data from various sources (extract), clean it (transform), to then store it into another system (load).

In terms of business intelligence, SSIS is a feature used to pull data from relational databases or files for later results stored into a data warehouse. SSIS designer is a graphical tool used to create packages while the SSIS runtime engine stores the package design, executes it and provides logging, breakpoint, configuration, connection and transactional, and handles events. Data Flow Task wrap data flow engine, engine that works to process ETL. Data Flow Engine consists of source (source), transformation (transformation), and destination (destination).

SSIS object models also include Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that can be used to create custom components for use in a package, or create custom applications that create, load, execute and manage packages. Program application developers can create these by using programming language C # or VB .Net.SSIS Service is a Windows Service that monitors the execution package and does the package storage.

Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services or abbreviated SSAS is a technology for OLAP and data mining. The OLAP process is done in SQL Server Management Studio in the form of viewing data, continued by creating Multidimensional Expression (MDX), Data Mining Extension (DMX) and XML for Analysis (XML / A) and define the role for security access OLAP data.BIDS can build core component from analysis services (data source, data views, dimension, value, cube, role, etc.).

Unified Dimensional Model (UDM) which is a bridge of an excell client or Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services to access multiple heterogeneous data sources. Most of the features of analysis services are in UDM, which consists of hierarchies, categorization, time representation, language translation and perspective as well as some advanced functionality such as proactive caching and analytics.

Analysis services act as a web service, so the language used is XML-Based. All communication from client to analysis services using standard based XLMA-Protocol. Microsoft continues to support a variety of technologies that have functionality provided by XML / A (ADO MD, ADO MDB.NET, OLE DB for OLAP, and Win32). XML / A is actually a subset of Analysis Services Scripting Language (ASSL), so XML / A sends command actions like create, alter and process (to create cube, alter cube and process cube).

The basic task of data mining in doing data processing into information, namely:
(1) Classification
(2) Regression
(3) Segmentation
(4) Association
(5) Sequence analysis

SSAS has nine types of data mining algorithms. Not all of these algorithms are used in solving data mining problems because each algorithm has characteristics that may match the characteristics of the problem that need to be resolved in the data mining solution. The types of data mining algorithms are:
(1) Microsoft Decision Tree
(2) Microsoft Association Rules
(3) Microsoft Linear Regression
(4) Microsoft Time Series
(5) Microsoft Naïve Bayes
(6) Microsoft Neutral Network
(7) Microsoft Clustering
(8) Microsoft Sequence Clustering, and
(9) Microsoft Logistic Regression Algorithm.

Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is a server-based reporting platform that provides report generation functionality for multiple data sources. SSRS consists of a collection of tools used to create, organize and submit reports, and application programming interfaces or APIs that make it easy for developers to integrate reports with custom applications.

Reports can be created in tabular, graphical form from a relational data source (OLTP), multidimensional (OLAP), or even XML.Can also publish reports, schedule report processing, or access reports when desired. With SSRS adhoc reports can also be created by model which is defined, and explores the data interactively based on the model. There are various formats for displaying and exporting reports to other applications, and sub-presenting published reports.
